Tips to Care for Your Feet During Pregnancy


Pregnancy means a lot of chances, in both your body and your life. While you are focusing on keeping your baby healthy and safe and battling some of the many pregnancy-related symptoms, including morning sickness, heartburn, and sore backs, there is another part of your body you need to pay attention to: your feet. Here are a few simple tips to help you care for your feet properly during pregnancy.

Prevent Foot and Ankle Swelling

It is not uncommon for pregnant women to suffer from swollen feet and ankles. The excess fluid retention combined with the pressure of the growing uterus can cause swelling to occur on several parts of the body, but especially in the feet and ankles. Luckily, there are several things you can do to prevent this uncomfortable swelling, including:

  • Elevate your feet throughout the day, especially when you are experiencing swelling
  • Stay off your feet as much as possible
  • Make sure to sit down or lie down throughout the day
  • Lie on your side in bed
  • Wear a pair of pregnancy compression stockings when you are sleeping

Drinking plenty of water can also help reduce swelling in the feet and ankles. Although it might seem strange, dehydration can actually make your swelling worse.

Wear the Right Shoes

Staying off your feet as much as possible can help keep your feet comfortable. Unfortunately, if you work, want to stay active, or are busy running around after your other children, it is impossible to sit down as much as you might like. Wearing the proper shoes can help prevent foot and ankle pain associated with swelling and the added weight of pregnancy.

For example, if you are pregnant in the summer, choose a pair of slip-on shoes or sandals that fit well and allow for fluid retention in your feet and ankles. Wearing tall boots will allow you to also wear compression socks, which can help you remain comfortable.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting shoes or high heels when you are pregnant. High heels can place a strain on your back and place the uterus in an uncomfortable position, in addition to causing unnecessary pain in your feet.

When to Talk to Your Doctor  

Finally, although swelling and discomfort in your feet and ankles is common during pregnancy, there are times when swelling can be a sign of a dangerous condition. Excessive swelling can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia, blood clots, high blood pressure, or deep vein thrombosis.
